Trans fat is a process where hydrogen is added into vegetable oil. It's called hydrogenation and it helps to increase the shelf life of the vegetable oil. It's bad for your health and you really do need to say goodbye to trans fat in your diet in order to lose weight as well. Some of the foods you need to avoid are some crackers, cookies, margarines and vegetable shortenings. Of course these foods cause weight gain too. Trans fat also raises LDL cholesterol levels and which contributes to heart disease. Get in the habit of reading labels and although you may buy the same brand of something doesn't mean the ingredients stay the same. Ingredients do change at times. On nutrition labels trans fat can be found under the saturated fat column. How much saturated fat is okay? 20% or more or the daily value is high and 5% or less is low. Here's a list of some foods and their daily value average saturated fat percentages, per serving size: * 35% fast food french fries. * 35% butter. * 10% stick margarine * 5% tub margarine * 8% mayonnaise * 18% shortening * 10% potato chips * 23% doughnut * 5% cream filled cookies * 20% candy bar * 18% pound cake As you can see, the foods that taste so delicious have higher saturated fat percentages. That's because hydrogenation improves the flavor. Monounsaturated fat foods are actually good for you and can improve your good cholesterol and even protect against heart disease. Almonds, walnuts and avocados are good examples of the good-fat foods. They tend to be higher in calories so you need to use portion control. Limiting your fat intake can certainly benefit your waistline. Eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and the good-fat foods to lose weight the healthy way. Say goodbye to trans fat in your diet in order to lose weight and get some exercise and you will be fit and healthy.
